Recently reported, Japanese sustainable textile innovation company Bioworks has developed a PlaX ™ Fabric, this is a new environmentally friendly fabric blended with cotton and polylactic acid (PLA). Bioworks' Plax ™ Previously, only short fibers were available, but starting from the promotion of long fibers for the autumn and winter of 2024, the product lineup of yarns and fabrics has been enriched. In addition, in order to control costs, production has also begun to be laid out in Southeast Asia.

PlaX ™ It is a synthetic fiber made by adding Bioworks' own additives to PLA made from sugarcane to improve its quality and functionality. Compared with previous PLA, it can improve durability, heat resistance, dyeing concentration, etc. At the same time, it has characteristics such as biodegradability, antibacterial, and deodorizing properties, and emits less carbon dioxide during manufacturing compared to polyester fibers.

Starting with short fibers, it is used for towels, socks, underwear, etc. The company's product "Bio Towel" is mainly sold for two purposes: as a corporate gift and for general consumers. The adoption of women's clothing brands in department stores is also increasing, targeting the spring and summer of 2024, with approximately 25 brands under the company's control using the product.

Long fiber products will be available for sale starting from autumn/winter 2024. Bioworks is expected to achieve an annual output of over 100 tons within this year and will begin mass production planning.

PlaX ™ High prices are a challenging issue, but there are already solutions available. In addition to production in Japan and Taiwan, China, Southeast Asia has also started one-stop production. Long fiber is undergoing trial production in Thailand and is expected to start mass production from July to September this year. The price is expected to be reduced to less than half within a few years.

As a new material that can replace existing synthetic fibers, PlaX ™  It has attracted the attention of major consumer brands from around the world. These features make PlaX ™  Becoming an ideal material for various textile industry applications.

Chow Pin Tan, Vice President of Asia at TotalEnergies Corbion, pointed out that Luminy ®PLA Nowadays widely used in Japan, it is a key component of Bioworks fabric innovation. Luminy ®PLA The carbon footprint of Japan is 75% lower than that of traditional plastics, and related industries and enterprises are working together to promote Japan's ambitious climate goals by providing environmentally responsible alternatives. Total Energy Cobain has recently partnered with Nagase, a leading distributor in Japan, to expand Luminy ®PLA Sales and distribution of bioplastics.

The Japanese company Bioworks was founded in 2015 with the goal of utilizing PlaX technology ™ Research and development, planning, and production to achieve sustainable development and a circular society. PlaX is a new carbon neutral material made from polylactic acid (PLA) and added with plant derived additives developed internally by Bioworks.
